GWS2011: The home stretch!  We look forward to welcoming you to New Orleans!

(posted March 5, 2011) — Over 1,000 of your colleagues will be gathering next week in New Orleans for GWS2011 ... and you can still be a part of it!  Online registration for the conference has ended, but you can still register for the conference on site.  The registration desk will be open all day, every day in New Orleans beginning Sunday afternoon, March 13. There is no extra charge for registering on-site. Go to for information about conference registration fees.

The GWS office will be closed March 8–22 while we travel to the conference.  If you need to contact us during this time, the best way is to send a message to  We will be checking email several times a day.

Earlybird registration deadline coming up fast—register by February 1 and save!

(posted January 24, 2010) — Registration for GWS2011 is in full swing, and the deadline for early registration discounts is February 1.  If you register on or before February 1, you'll save $50 on the registration fees for full-week and 2-day registrations.  Don't delay!  Over 700 people have already registered, and you don't want to miss joining them in New Orleans.

You can go directly to the registration form here ... but before you do, check out our roster of Field Trips, Service Projects, and Special Events described under the "Program" link on the menu.  Some of these events require advance sign-up on the registration form.

  • "I registered a few days ago, but I haven't gotten a confirmation/receipt yet ... should I be worried?"  No.  We currently have a large backlog of registrations to process, and it could take 7–10 days to do so.  Rest assured, if you submitted your registration AND your payment information before February 1, you will get the discounted rate.

The program for the Concurrent Sessions is now complete.  We will be offering the largest GWS program ever, with over 200 sessions covering all aspects of parks, protected areas, and cultural sites.  To download a PDF of the daily listing of Concurrent Sessions, click the "Program>Day-by-Day Schedule" link on the menu.


Draft abstracts now available

(posted January 15, 2011) — Complete abstracts for the Concurrent Sessions and the Poster Session (including Exhibits) are now available online.  The abstracts are subject to final corrections by their authors.




Room block at the Sheraton filling quickly; list of alternative hotels

(posted January 5, 2011) — As of today, our sleeping room block at the host hotel, the Sheraton New Orleans, is full on some nights.  Here is the current status:

  • Saturday, March 12: A small number of rooms still available within GWS block
  • Sunday, March 13: Rooms still available within GWS block
  • Monday, March 14: Rooms still available within GWS block
  • Tuesday, March 15: Rooms still available within GWS block
  • Wednesday, March 16: Rooms still available within GWS block
  • Thursday, March 17: Hotel is entirely full — no rooms available at all
  • Friday, March 18: Hotel is entirely full — no rooms available at all

Conference registration to open December 1; sleeping room block more than 50% full

(posted November 19, 2010) — We are now putting the finishing touches on various logistical details for GWS2011, and are on schedule to open registration for the conference on December 1.

But you don't have to wait until December 1 to reserve a sleeping room at the conference hotel, the Sheraton New Orleans. In fact, with the room block already more than half full, we urge you to get your reservations early!  Click here for instructions on how to book your hotel room.



Day-by-day schedule of Concurrent Sessions now available

(posted November 19, 2010) — You can now download a PDF of the day-by-day schedule of the Concurrent Sessions — more than 200 in all.

Please keep in mind that the schedule will changes numerous times before the conference; we will post updates on a regular basis.



Record number of abstracts received

(posted October 12, 2010) — A record number of abstracts were received in response to the GWS2011 Call for Proposals.  Over 680 abstracts have been submitted for consideration, about 50 more than for GWS2009.  The Conference Committee will be meeting in late October to evaluate the abstracts and create the program of Concurrent Sessions.

Deadline for abstracts has passed

(posted October 1, 2010) — The deadline for abstracts was yesterday, September 30. The links to abstract submission forms have been disabled. If you've already submitted an abstract, you should have gotten an email from us acknowledging receipt of your submission.  That email references an abstract identifying number in the subject line.  If you submitted an abstract, but did NOT get this acknowledgment email message, please contact the GWS at or call 1-906-487-9722.
