Returning to his roots, biologist E.O. Wilson praises Alabama's Historic Blakeley SP; touts NWR designation for delta

BLAKELEY, Ala. -- Scientist Edward O. Wilson won two Pulitzer prizes and taught at Harvard for 40 years, but said that Blakeley and the Mobile-Tensaw Delta hold a special place for him.

At a reception in his honor at Historic Blakeley State Park on Thursday, the Birmingham native --- who now lives in Massachusetts -- told audience members that his family, as well as his career, links with the site.

Wilson praised the park for preserving both historic sites and the environment. He said he hopes such environmental protection can be extended beyond the park on Ala. 225. He said he is working with local residents in an effort to have other areas of Mobile-Tensaw River delta declared a national wildlife refuge.
