Construction of artificial dune at Fire Island NS, meant to protect barrier island from storm erosion, could begin next year

Dune-building in front of Fire Island’s eastern communities could begin early next year, an official estimated Saturday.

The $207 million dune, designed and fully funded by the Army Corps of Engineers, is about two years behind schedule due to storms, overbooked dredgers, and the complicated process of acquiring the land needed.
