Study continues of possible NHS status for first town founded by African Americans

PITTSFIELD — Although the timetable has changed, a study to determine whether the New Philadelphia Townsite should become a national park will continue.

Congress initiated the study in 2014 to determine if the New Philadelphia Townsite would be a good fit to join the ranks of the many parks under National Park Service, or NPS, management. According to Tokey Boswell, chief of the planning and compliance division, some of the study has been presented to NPS leadership, though additional information is still being gathered.
