Archaeologists at Maine's Colonial Pequamid SHS unearth remains of house believed to be from mid-1600s

Archaeologists have begun to unearth what they believe is another structure at the Colonial Pemaquid state historic site that could date back to the mid 1600's. The site is located in Midcoast Maine, about 13 miles south of Damariscotta, on the banks of the Pemaquid River. The discovery sheds more light on the early settlment at Colonial Pemaquid, a 17th century fishing village, which is considered one of the most historic sites in Maine.

The team has found very few artifacts at this particulary spot, but that's problably because the site was bulldozed in the 1960's to build tourists camps. Historians say that while that construction work did move artifacts around, it also brought the site to the attention of archaeologists who had been working nearby. Since that time the state has a pretty good picture of what the village looked like in the late 17th century.
