Editorial: Bloc Quebecois criticism of Parks Canada's free passes to schoolchildren unwarranted
What is the measure of a political party’s desperation? When it criticizes a free pass for schoolchildren to visit Canada’s national parks as federalist propaganda.
In a letter sent to eighth-graders across the country (Secondary II in Quebec), Prime Minister Stephen Harper informs them that they can visit Canada’s National Parks gratis for a period of twelve months. The letter says, in translation:
“Come explore our mountains, our forests, our battlefields, our forts, our campsites and more… As Canadians, we are fortunate to live in a country that has a rich history and natural beauty. The pass allows you to learn more about the history and nature shared by all Canadians. As future leaders, you hold Canada in your hands. The best way to prepare to lead is to know as much as possible about this great country of ours. Enjoy it well! “
According to Bloc MP Carole Lavallée, this letter is an attempt to sell federalism in Quebec.
“It is propaganda for the government and the prime minister’s office to send a letter to the schools addressing youth as future leaders of Canada.”
Good grief. Did it ever occur to Ms. Lavallee that perhaps Mr. Harper was just using flattery to entice the kids away from their Playstations? Everyone knows that not all kids will become leaders – unfortunately some will drop out of school, end up in jail or worse – but no one’s going to put that in writing. (Hey kids, visit our national parks. Experiencing the open air will prepare you for life as a street person, after you develop a crystal meth addiction and your parents kick you out of the house.)
