Washington senators call on Obama to declare NMon in San Juan Islands

President Obama should move under a Teddy Roosevelt-era law to designate a new national monument on small but choice federal holdings in the San Juan Islands, Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, D-Wash., told the president in a letter.

The senators turned to Obama because legislation to create a National Conservation Area, despite bipartisan local backing, stands no chance of emerging from the Republican-run House Natural Resources Committee.
