Editorial: New decision to limit buffer zones around India's PAs will affect core areas
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The controversial recommendation by Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to keep safety zones (eco-sensitive zones) around wildlife sanctuaries and national parks to two km to 100 metres from the parks' boundary will impact the core green zones in the state.
The CEC recommendation has come at a time when states like Kerala have been dilly-dallying to implement an earlier Supreme Court order to demarcate a 10 km boundary, encompassing eco sensitive zones for national park and wild life sanctuaries. Environmental experts said this recommendation, if implemented, will see a series of uncontrolled real estate developments around national parks and sanctuaries.
