Texas acquires 70-acre plot in historic site of planned capital

SAN FELIPE, Texas––The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recently acquired a 70-acre tract of land along the Brazos River in San Felipe that is part of the original plat of Stephen F. Austin’s colonial capital.

The acquisition will allow the THC to develop a new visitors center for heritage tourists interested in the early history of colonial Texas. The acquired land sits directly across FM 1458 from the existing San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, which has been owned and managed by the State of Texas since 1940.
