Tribal leaders tour part of proposed Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks NMon

LAS CRUCES >> A small group of tribal and pueblo leaders toured a patch of southern New Mexico desert Friday morning to see Native American rock art and cultural artifacts of centuries past.

Among visitors was Jeff Haozous, chairman of the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, which has 30 acres of reservation land off Interstate 10 between Las Cruces and Deming. He said the group saw one piece of rock art that might have been of Apache origin, while most of the other depictions were from the Mogollon culture.
