Dear friends and colleagues,

The International Ranger Federation (IRF) and IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), in collaboration with Parks Victoria and the George Wright Society, call for nominations for the

2010 YOUNG CONSERVATIONIST AWARD 

The award aims to recognize and raise awareness of the outstanding contributions made to the management of protected areas, and leadership shown, by young conservationists. It also seeks to encourage young professionals and help them develop networks by inviting winners to attend one of the global conservation events and become a member of the Young Conservationists Global Community. For the 2010 award, the winner will be have his/her travel, accommodation, and conference fees fully paid to attend the ‘Healthy Parks – Healthy People’ conference, April 2010, Melbourne, Australia.

Nominations/applications are invited for/from: young people working in conservation and actively managing protected areas. This includes all people working in protected areas, such as (but not limited to) rangers, interpreters, people working with local communities, policy makers, and scientists, and includes people working for government agencies, the private sector, non-government organizations, local communities, etc., who deal directly with protected area management and policy.

Nominations/applications must be submitted for/by:

  • young protected area practitioners (under the age of 35)
  • for their outstanding contribution (either a single incident or a sustained/ongoing commitment) towards protected area management (from a local to a global scale)

The young professional’s work must show:

  1.  Extraordinary dedication to protected areas 
  2.  Demonstration of an innovative approach to protected area management
  3. Passion, dedication, and commitment
  4. Degree of innovation (thinking outside the box)
  5. Self-sacrifice (time, costs, physical bravery, etc.)
  6. Scale/extent/magnitude/impact of contribution (area and duration)

The Young Conservationist Award Review Panel will select a winner based on candidate responses to the following questions, which give the candidate an opportunity to succinctly describe his/her qualifications with reference to the six crtieria above. Please note there is a 150 word limit on each question which must be strictly adhered to.

  1.  Describe your contribution to protected area management
  2.  What makes your work innovative?
  3. What have been the impacts of your protected area work (impacts of scale, extent, magnitude, time)?
  4. What challenges have you faced in your work?
